Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Cross-chain bridges are essential infrastructure for enabling secure asset transfers between heterogeneous blockchains.
However, decentralized-trust bridges must wait for the finality of the source chain to prevent cross-chain double spending, resulting in significant transfer latency.
This study theoretically and empirically analyzes the relationship between secure asset transfer latency and the number of source-chain validators by combining real Polygon PoS Bridge transfer data with a mathematical model of Ethereum finality time.
The results demonstrate that secure asset transfer latency is strongly governed by the finality time of the source blockchain and increases as the number of validators grows.
Based on these findings, we show that source-chain finality constitutes an inherent lower bound on the transfer performance of decentralized-trust bridges and derive a design theory for cross-chain bridges.
As a concrete realization of this design theory, we propose a fast asset transfer scheme based on trusted third parties and a guarantee pool, and discuss design guidelines for balancing security and processing performance.
