We measured the dielectric constant (Dk) and dielectric loss tangent (Df) at 10 GHz for 15 types of polyimide (PI) groups, including fully aromatic, semi-aromatic, partially fluorinated, and perfluorinated varieties, and quantitatively analyzed their correlations with chemical structure, dielectric polarization (Pt) per unit volume, dipole polarization (Pd), and electronic polarization (Pe). It was newly revealed that the Dk and Df of PIs measured in the TE011 mode exhibit anisotropy and show linear relationships with in-plane Pe and Pd, respectively. Since Pd is estimated from Dk and in-plane refractive index (nTE), this result indicates that the real part (Dk) and the imaginary part (Df) of the complex permittivity are interrelated. Furthermore, Dk and Df increased linearly with the relative humidity (RH) of the measurement environment, and their slopes (hDk and hDf), corresponding to their RH sensitivity, were found to be proportional to each other. The weight fraction of polar groups (imide and ester groups) (Polar%) and the weight fraction of hydrophobic fluorine (F%) are important factors that determine the values of hDk and hDf, in addition to Dk and Df. These relationships are highly useful for the design of novel low-dielectric PI materials exhibiting low Dk and Df, as well as low humidity sensitivity. |
