This paper investigates an early-exit inference mechanism that reduces the computational complexity of neural receivers for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM).
The receiver produces log-likelihood ratios (LLRs) at an intermediate layer, and inference terminates for each received block according to the confidence estimated from the LLRs.
Through link-level simulations, we design and evaluate the mechanism, showing that the threshold provides continuous control over the trade-off between block error rate (BLER) and computational complexity, and that the mean binary entropy of the LLRs discriminates decoding success more reliably than the mean absolute LLR.
Even in the region where switching based on the SNR yields no savings, early exit with the entropy-based metric reduces the average complexity by 50.3% while keeping the increase in the $E_{mathrm{b}}/N_0$ required for a BLER of 10% within 0.2 dB. |
