Low-Power Remote Antennas for Extended Operational Coverage of Large-capacity Wireless Transmission using Millimeter-wave Band

(in English) A remote antenna, in which a receiving antenna is placed away from the demodulator and the received signal is transferred to the demodulator using radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology, is an effective means of increasing deployment flexibility in high-capacity millimeter-wave transmission systems. Such systems are intended for wireless transmission of content, including high-resolution 360-degree video, from mobile platforms such as ships and road vehicles, as well as from locations where cable installation is difficult. To enable remote antennas to be installed at locations without a power supply, low-power operation using a battery is required. This paper proposes a low-power remote antenna configuration based on millimeter-wave RoF, which eliminates the need for frequency conversion at the remote antenna. The optical source for the electrical-to-optical converter is also located at the demodulator side, thereby further reducing power consumption at the remote antenna. A method for mitigating signal-level variations caused by polarization fluctuations in the optical fiber link is investigated, and its effectiveness is experimentally evaluated. A prototype remote antenna is also evaluated. The results show that the proposed configuration reduces power consumption at the remote antenna to approximately one-eighth of that of the conventional configuration, while limiting the degradation in BER performance to approximately 2 dB.
