In a resistive load circuit with a DC supply voltage of 100 – 250 V and a circuit current of 10 A, a pair of silver contacts equipped with an airflow-blowing mechanism was separated at a constant speed of 1 m/s to generate break arcs. Experiments were conducted with supply voltages of 100, 150, 200, and 250 V. In addition, two types of anode contacts with different airflow outlet geometries were used. The arc duration, arc voltage waveform, and arc motion characteristics observed by two high-speed cameras were investigated, and the following results were obtained. For both contact geometries, the airflow-blowing effect reduced the arc duration at supply voltages of 100 and 150 V. At 200 V, no reduction effect was observed for Contact A, whereas a reduction in arc duration was obtained in some cases for Contact B. At 250 V, no reduction effect was observed for either contact geometry. The cathode spot of the break arc moved from the contact surface to the side surface of the contact owing to the airflow blowing effect. |
