Research is underway to realize direct communication between ground terminals and a phased-array antenna constructed in low Earth orbit (LEO) by flying formations of CubeSats with dimensions of 10 cm × 10 cm × 10 cm (1U) or smaller. In inter-satellite communications during formation flight, the satellites are expected to act as reflectors, resulting in frequency-selective fading. Electromagnetic simulations based on the finite element method (FEM) and ray tracing are widely used to quantitatively evaluate such communication impairments. This paper compares FEM and ray-tracing simulations using a model consisting of 25 satellites. The results show that when both the satellite size and the inter-satellite distance are small compared with the wavelength, ray tracing fails to account for significant wave phenomena, and therefore does not reproduce the fading observed in the FEM results. In addition, changing the maximum number of reflections and the minimum ray density per wavelength had little effect on the simulation results. Finally, X-band simulations of a 100-satellite formation were carried out using ray tracing. Compared with the 25-satellite case, stronger multipath effects were observed, suggesting that ray tracing is a promising approach for large-scale electromagnetic simulations. |
