For high-capacity communication using high-altitude platform stations (HAPS), stabilizing the Q-band feeder link (FL) between HAPS and ground gateway stations (GWs) is essential. Rain attenuation degrades the Q-band FL quality, and site diversity using multiple GWs is effective; however, GW contention and switching outages can reduce the effective throughput in multi-HAPS environments. This paper evaluates a GW selection method that determines the network-wide HAPS--GW assignment based on the instantaneous throughput and a switching penalty, comparing it with fixed-GW and distance-hysteresis schemes. Simulation results using rainfall observation data show that the method reduces the number of GW switches while maintaining the mean network effective throughput and lowering the rain attenuation of the selected FLs. |
