A Longitudinal Study of Security Implementation -- An Evaluation of Japanese Fortune 500 Companies Using Internet.nl --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study presents a longitudinal evaluation of the public-facing Web and email infrastructure of 41 Japanese Fortune 500 companies using Internet.nl from 2024 to 2026. Corporate security is examined not only from the perspective of self-protection, but also from that of protecting corporate brands and maintaining societal trust. Internet trust relies on multiple mechanisms, including DNSSEC, TLS certificates, and RPKI. The average scores improved from 55.3 for Web and 54.7 for Mail in 2024 to 65.1 and 63.2, respectively, in 2026, reflecting progress in RPKI, IPv6, HTTPS/TLS, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. However, only one company passed the Web DNSSEC assessment and only four passed the email DNSSEC assessment, while significant issues remain with security options and STARTTLS/DANE. Individual analyses also revealed that implementing basic security measures does not necessarily mean that the overall public-facing infrastructure has been sufficiently modernized. Companies should therefore specify required technologies themselves, continuously verify their implementation through external assessments, and clearly define responsibilities with service providers rather than relying entirely on vendors. Since technical measures alone cannot eliminate phishing attacks exploiting human perception, I propose a Corporate Authenticity Infrastructure combining server and legal-entity authenticity, together with a Corporate Brand Protection Capability Rating System for continuous assessment and improvement.
