For Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems in time-varying multipath environments, we propose a highly accurate channel estimation and tracking method combining path model selection via the Generalized Akaike Information Criterion (GAIC) and the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm. The proposed method efficiently extracts a suitable path model in the preamble period using a power-based sequential search with GAIC. In the data period, the EM
algorithm tracks time variations using the extracted path model as prior information. Numerical simulations show that the initial estimation accuracy asymptotically approaches the Cramer-Rao lower bound across arbitrary path models. Furthermore, we confirm that the proposed method can successfully track the channel even in highly time-varying environments, achieving superior Mean Squared Error and Bit Error Rate performances. |
