Speculative video transmission in cloud gaming hides input-to-display latency by generating and transmitting video frames for possible future inputs in advance. However, game inputs often remain unchanged over many consecutive frames and then change abruptly when players change direction or press or release buttons. In such sequences, overall prediction accuracy is dominated by performance on frames with unchanged inputs, while a single prediction candidate may fail to capture the actual input following a transition. If that input is absent from the speculative candidates, the video frames generated and transmitted in advance cannot be used, and the system can no longer hide the latency.
We propose a method for generating top-(K) speculative input candidates by estimating the probability of each input bit in the next frame from past input history. In addition to the most likely input, the method enumerates alternative inputs in ascending order of the sum of the costs associated with flipping bits relative to the most likely input. By including post-transition inputs that a single prediction may miss in a limited set of speculative candidates, the proposed method aims to accommodate abrupt changes during sustained input while limiting network traffic.
Using approximately 27.05 hours of input logs collected from 16 sessions across 10 games, we evaluated the effective frame rate over all frames and prediction accuracy at input transitions. With 10 speculative candidates, the proposed method achieved effective frame rates of 57.9 fps in the same-player setting and 55.8 fps in the different-player setting, outperforming the comparison methods in both settings. |
