The evolution of mobile communications and IP networking has established networks as essential infrastructure connecting people and things across the globe. However, the rapid proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) and advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are fundamentally transforming the role of networks.
Enterprise networking has evolved from environments centered on internal information systems to architectures designed to support cloud services, Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), and real-time collaborations. At the same time, IoT has progressed beyond simple connectivity toward Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), where data collected from sensors and devices are analyzed by cloud platforms and AI systems, and the resulting insights are fed back into the physical world to optimize the operation of facilities, buildings, vehicles, and robotic systems. Furthermore, Physical AI is positioning networks as critical societal infrastructure that supports autonomous decision-making by both humans and intelligent machines.
In such environments, merely providing connectivity is no longer sufficient. Modern networks are required to deliver connectivity, security, observability, controllability, reliability, and governance as integrated capabilities. Network as a Service (NaaS), which virtualizes network functions for flexible consumption, has attracted growing attention. Technologies such as Zero Trust architectures, edge computing, and Network APIs are accelerating the transformation of networks from communication utilities into programmable platforms.
This invited talk reviews how IoT technologies are transforming physical assets, operational spaces, and human work itself through practical examples, including retail environments, smart buildings, connected vehicles, and robotics. It also examines the concept of trustworthiness in the era of Physical AI and discusses the evolving role of networks in AI-pervasive societies. Finally, the talk explores how NaaS can serve as a foundation for creating new value by enabling trustworthy collaboration between humans, AI agents, and physical systems. |
