A Study on the Frequency Scaling of Cross-Polarization Discrimination in Ku and Ka band satellite communications links

(in English) This study investigates frequency scaling in the Ku band, Ka band uplink channels, and 35 GHz band along the same propagation path, using the cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) and cross-polar phase of the CS beacon signals (19.45 GHz, right-hand circular polarization) measured at Osaka Electro-Communication University (Neyagawa City, Osaka Prefecture) from 1988 to 2006. The XPD values of these frequencies are estimated by the frequency scaling of the rain attenuation of the CS beacon signal and its theoretical relationship with the XPD based on three types of raindrop size distributions (DSDs). The cross-polar phases are similarly estimated by the theoretical relationship with the XPD based on each DSD, using the fact that the effect of raindrop canting angle remains constant regardless of frequency. The results demonstrate that in the yearly cumulative time percentages of 1% to 0.01%, the XPD degradation remains limited to approximately 10 dB in all frequencies, although the amount of rain attenuation is increased significantly with the frequency.
