This paper proposes a simple, root-finding-free mode-matching method based on a one-dimensional (1-D) Q-matrix approach combined with the generalized scattering matrix (GSM) technique. By rigorously expanding the transverse discontinuous relative permittivity distribution into a matrix formulation using the sinusoidal eigenfunctions of a hollow waveguide, the transverse Helmholtz equation is successfully reduced to a standard linear matrix eigenvalue problem. This formulation completely eliminates the need for iterative root-finding, allowing all complex propagation constants and corresponding mode amplitudes to be extracted simultaneously and uniquely through a single algebraic operation. Unlike existing multidimensional projection methods that suffer from dimensional explosion, the proposed 1-D formulation significantly reduces the computational matrix size while perfectly preserving numerical robustness via deterministic mode sorting under high-loss conditions. The validity, high computational efficiency, and numerical stability of the proposed method are verified through S-parameter calculations for rectangular dielectric posts inside a WR-90 waveguide over the 8–18 GHz range, demonstrating excellent agreement with three-dimensional finite-element method (3-D FEM) results. |
