In online classes, a mismatch of needs arises between students who prefer to keep their cameras off and teachers who feel a sense of emptiness—akin to "talking to a wall"—when cameras are disabled. Focusing on the potential of "1/f fluctuation" to express both universality and individuality while fostering a sense of humanity and rapport, this study conducted an experiment using an "eyes-only avatar" that incorporated 1/f fluctuation into its gaze movements. The objective was to determine whether such an avatar would be perceived as an attentive listener, thereby alleviating the speaker's sense of emptiness and influencing their feeling of being heard. Comparisons among avatars exhibiting gaze movements based on 1/f fluctuation, fixed timing, and random timing revealed that the 1/f fluctuation condition consistently resulted in the longest speaking durations and highest word counts, whereas the random condition yielded the lowest. However, regarding questionnaire ratings for the "feeling of being heard," "presence of personality or intent," "approachability," and "human-likeness," the fixed-timing condition received the highest scores; meanwhile, the avatar's movement, appearance, and reactions also influenced the results, leading to negative or neutral evaluations. These findings suggest that avatars consisting only of eyes that perform gaze movements accompanied by 1/f fluctuations may unconsciously enhance the speaker's sense of being heard, but may also consciously diminish that sense. Therefore, it seems necessary to either reconsider the appearance of the avatar or shift the application of 1/f fluctuation from merely timing to the quality of the movement itself. |
