Comparing Lexical Commonalities Reflected in Document Embedding Spaces: Toward Selecting Document Organization Methods for Different Analytical Purposes

(in English) Advances in document embedding techniques allow the same document collection to be organized from different perspectives. However, it is difficult to know in advance which organization method is suitable for a given analytical purpose. We propose a framework for comparing what kinds of commonalities each organization method supports. We compute the probability of reaching documents that contain a given word by random walks on a document neighborhood graph. We then quantify how localized each word is using mutual information. This allows us to compare commonalities formed by different organization methods. We applied the framework to papers from the Information Processing Society of Japan’s Entertainment Computing research community. We compared two embedding spaces based on experience-design descriptions and paper abstracts. The results showed different patterns of preservation and attenuation for commonalities related to user experience and those related to research topics and technologies. These results provide evidence about what kinds of commonalities each organization method supports for document comparison.
