A note on psychological factors associated with absences from bouts of professional sumo wrestlers

(in English) Prediction models for sumo wrestlers' absences from bouts based on competitive records have been studied; however, they have not addressed the psychological factors underlying the occurrence of such absences, which limits their usefulness for deriving concrete interventions to prevent absences. In this study, we quantify ego and task orientations as well as desire for approval through a questionnaire survey of 19 active wrestlers, and examine their associations with the number of absences by cross-referencing the survey data with official competitive records. In particular, we evaluate the effect of each psychological factor on the number of absences using Poisson regression analysis. We then verify the robustness of the regression results through a sensitivity analysis, and discuss that the associations of task orientation and desire for approval with the number of absences constitute exploratory findings that depend on a specific observation.
