Does Japanese motherese help children acquire Japanese rhythm? -- Distributional analysis of moraic phonemes in infant-directed speech --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) When adults talk to infants or young children, they often modify their way of speaking. This modified speech is called "motherese" or "infant-directed speech" (IDS) and is said to differ from "adult-directed speech" (ADS). However, the precise manner in which IDS differs from ADS is not entirely clear. The present study examines a Japanese infant-directed speech corpus (RIKEN Japanese Mother-Infant Conversation Corpus (R-JMICC)), focusing especially on how moraic phonemes or "special moras" (second half of long vowels, moraic nasala, and moraic obstruents) are distributed in IDS. Results indicate that: (1) the rate of occurrence of moraic phonemes is higher in IDS than in ADS, (2) the relative frequency of particular word classes such as onomatopoeia and mimetics is higher in IDS than in ADS, and (3) onomatopoeia and mimetics that appear in IDS contain special moras more often than do those that appear in ADS. These results open up the possibility that infants are exposed to many instances of special moras through onomatopoeia and other word classes in IDS.
