Perceptual Binding of Visual stimuli presented in different spatial locations

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Some perceptual mechanisms manifest high temporal precision, allowing reports of visual information even when that information is restricted to windows smaller than 50 ms. We here investigated the temporal limit to perceptually bind together visual information located in spatially separate places, using color patches and letters as visual stimuli which were flickered. According to increment of visual stimulus, and of eccentricity between them to be bound together, the temporal limits (critical temporal frequencies) were decreased. Moreover, visual word parts restrict the time scale for perceptual binding, especially in case that the two sets of alternating words have meaning or have relation between the words. These results support the theory that explicit perceptual access to visual information extracted at late stages is limited to coarse time scales.
