Neurophysiological fundamentals of melodic techniques for word learning and memorizing
Ariko Araki, Yoshitada Katagiri, Toshio Kawamata (Kobe Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Although previous papers suggest that musical tones support memorizing words, the neural mechanism, which will be necessary for creating fundamentals for designing novel clinical treatment methods, has not been clearly elicited. We here investigated how musical tones are effective in unfamiliar-word (Latin word) memorizing tasks, based on neurophysiology using conventional event-related potential (ERP) techniques. We found significant difference in ERP waveforms between melody and monotone conditions: the monotone provided higher contingent negative variation level than the music. This indicates that much more effort was focused on performing task requirements in the monotone condition, compared with the music condition. This means that music supported word-memorizing tasks, saving attention resources.
