The Effects of Fixation Point on Reading Scrolling Text
Yuusuke Gunji, Hiromi Morita (Univ. of Tsukuba) HCS2008-18 HIP2008-18
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We examined the effects of fixation point on reading scrolling text. Participants adjusted the scrolling rate so that they could comfortably read the text scrolling in the window, with their eyes moving freely (normal condition), directing at the mark presented at the center of the window (center condition), or directing at the mark presented at the right end of the window (right condition). The comfortable scrolling rate was larger for the center condition comparing to that for the right condition, though the rate was largest for the normal condition where eye movements were not controlled. We discuss the possibility that reading with one’s eyes directing to the center of the window is advantageous over reading with one’s eyes directing at the right end of the window as is often the case with reading scrolling text, in relation to the preprocessing of the text appearing in the right visual field in reading printed text.
