Prosodic Characteristics in Utternaces of English Spoken by Japanese Native Subjects -- Comparison of Prominence between Native English and Japanese English --

(in English) In order to clarify the differentiating the prosodic features of English spoken by Japanese native subjects, 30 declarative sentences uttered by 10 native English speakers and 16 native Japanese speakers are comparatively analyzed. The analysis focuses on duration, power patterns and pitch patterns of individual words that compose the sentences. Results are summarized as follows: in native English, duration is longer than others in words at sentence ends or at the beginning of the sentences in which subjects are followed by be-V. Content words or comparative words are stressed in power patterns and content words are also in pitch patterns in native English. On the other hand in Japanese English, duration is all tending longwinded compared with native English, particularly words with phonemes of English peculiarities, except at the end of the sentences or at the beginning of the sentences in which subjects are followed by be-V. Also Japanese English have tendency to stress words indefinitely in power patterns and pitch patterns.
