Distribution of object slant in visual space and anisotropy of perceived slant
Shuichi Otsuka, Hirohiko Kaneko (Tokyo Tech.) HIP2007-137
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The distribution of surface slant are not isotropic in the visual environment. For instance, there are many surfaces slanted top away relative to the visual line like ground surfaces in the lower visual field. The purpose of this study is to measure the anisotropy of perceived slant and to investigate the relation between the anisotropy and the distribution of object slant in the visual environment. Using red-blue anaglyph stimulus, we measured the biases of perceived slants and the response times for a line stimulus presented at the three (upper, centre and lower) locations. The results of experiment showed that a line segment which under binocular viewing appears that the portions of it above and below fixation incline toward and away from the observer, respectively, in fact, is perceived such that it is oriented vertically to the line of sight. The results also showed that the response time to a line segment whose portion above incline away from the observer is slightly longer than the other. These imply that there may be the biases that work at an advantage in perceiving the slant of horizontal surfaces like ground surfaces in the lower visual field and that of vertical surfaces like walls.
