Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We are developing a vibration-based visual assistance system (Vibro-eyesight by Walking; VieW) for the visually impaired, which generates vibrational stimuli from the distance variation to obstacles caused by walking. A similar previous study, Electronic Travel Aids (ETAs), which generate vibration stimuli directly from distance values to obstacles, is known. The purpose of this study is set to obtain knowledge about spatial perception through walking experiments with implementation of both of proposed VieW and conventional ETAs systems. Walking experiments were conducted with two types of tasks: frontal wall detection during walking and walking in a corridor. We obtained positional and postural data, video data and speech data during walking, and conducted a questionnaire survey on the impression of ease of walking and sense of safety to the experimental subjects after the walking trials, and were able to clarify the issues that should be added to VieW.
