Methods for an electrical wheelchair driving have been investigated from aspects of automatic driving to a target position and operation for a physically disabled person. The authors are investigating automatic navigation or carrier by electrical wheelchair in wide indoor area. The position estimation of the wheelchair is indispensable for automatic driving. The estimation by rotary encoders which detect the motor rotation accumulates the estimation error and this disenables to arrive accurately at the target position. This paper describes the accumulated error compensation method by using an ultrasonic positioning system and map matching used by outputs of laser range finder. The validity of the proposed method has been confirmed by the experiments that were carried out using the wheelchair, which is moved by two motors rotation.
