Misinformation effects on the recollection of familiar everyday objects -- Investigation based on the recollection of the new 1000yen note --

(in English) This study looked at misinformation effects which had previously been examined in studies on eyewitness memory, and investigated whether the same effects would occur with familiar everyday objects, in this case, the new 1000 yen note. Some of the test subjects were given plausible misinformation about the new 1000 yen note and then asked to draw one. Others were given both plausible and blatant misinformation, and asked to do the same thing. The results showed that misinformation affected the recollection of familiar everyday objects. Furthermore, adding blatant misinformation gave rise to a “spillover effect” (Loftus, 1979), in that test subjects were less likely to be deceived by plausible misinformation. However, the incidence of the spillover effect depended on the types of blatant misinformation. This result suggests that the attributes of misinformation items are one of the factors in determining the incidence of the spillover effect.
