A study on visual search strategies in driving by an eye movement analysis

(in English) To examine effects of driver’s experience and age on the visual search strategies in driving, we measured eye movements during simulated driving. In the experiment, we manipulated driver’s experience and age, and compared the eye movements obtained in selected driving road situations (e.g., intersection and straight road) among the groups. The results showed that a total distance of eye movements was shorter and fixation duration was longer in the trained group than in the untrained and aged groups, suggesting that the trained drivers adopt efficient search strategy by the anticipation skill and useful field of view with their experiences of driving.
