Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper presents the study of wideband circularly polarized (CP) stacked microstrip patch antenna using coaxial feeding probe for radio frequency identification (RFID) reader applications. Various types of wideband circularly polarized stacked microstrip antenna have been developed. The optimization of feed location between the diagonal axis and the orthogonal axis of the lower radiating patch, the axial-ratio (AR) bandwidth of rectangular stacked patch was improved [1]. Moreover, a circular slot along the diagonal axis of a driven square patch with a microstrip stub and stacked square patch was presented to generate circularly polarized radiation [2]. This paper proposes the effects of rectangular or square slot along the diagonal axis of square radiating patch and parasitic patch to generate circularly polarized radiation. The antenna is designed on FR-4 substrate with the thickness of 1.6 mm, relative permittivity of 4.4, and loss tangent of 0.019. The antenna design procedure begins by the designing square microstrip patch with the size of 75 mm ? 75 mm fed by a coaxial feeding probe along the orthogonal axis at (x ,y) points (Ant. 1). It is noticed that the antenna cannot generate circularly polarized radiation. In order to generate the circularly polarized radiation, the square slot with the size of 12.5 mm ? 12.5 mm is etched on a square microstrip patch along the diagonal axis (Ant. 2). It is found that the impedance bandwidth and AR bandwidth can be controlled by tuning the rectangular slot on both the radiating patch and the ground plane with same size and position (Ant. 3). Moreover, the circularly polarized performance can further improve by placing the parasitic patch (150 mm ? 150 mm) in front of driven square patch, which is embed the square slot (12.5 mm ? 12.5) on both the microstrip patch and ground plane (Ant. 4). The separation distance between the two patches is 80 mm. The proposed antenna (Ant. 4) has overall size of 200 mm ? 200 ? 80 mm. The simulated impedance bandwidth and AR bandwidth of antenna are 25 MHz (905 ? 930 MHz) and 10 MHz (910 ? 920 MHz), respectively. From this study, it may be useful as the guideline in the design and development the circularly polarized stacked microstrip patch antenna for ultra-high frequency (UHF) RFID in the future.
