This study examined how native English speakers and native Japanese speakers recognize pitch accent within Japanese words “ame” (‘rain’ for the first accent and ‘candy’ for the second accent). First, the sound stimuli of the words were synthesized, and then, the differences between the fundamental frequencies of the two words were divided by eight in order to create nine stimuli. Three native English speakers from the U.S.A. and three native Japanese speakers from the Tokyo area identified whether the accent was on the first syllable or on the second. |
