A Study on the legibility of braille with wider interdot spaces than the standard
Tetsuya Watanabe, Susumu Oouchi (NISE) WIT2007-30
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Persons who acquired visual disability late in life sometimes find it easier to read enlarged braille rather than the standard-sized braille. Thus, we developed software which can print braille with variable interdot spaces. By using this software, we printed braille sheets with five kinds of interdot spaces and conducted an experiment to explore the relationship between the interdot spaces and legibility of braille with beginners in braille as subjects. Both objective and subjective data showed that (1) braille with wider interdot spaces than the Japanese standard-sized braille was easier to read, but (2) braille with too wide interdot spaces, such as Jumbo Braille, was difficult to read, therefore (3) the Japanese L-sized braille and braille with its neighboring sizes were appropriate for the beginners.
