Encrypted data sharing system based on IBE secure against the KGC

(in English) Encryption technology to send and share data is popularized. However, these tools can protect communication route, but these can not designate the decryption time. In reality, there are cases when we need an encrypted data sharing system which can designate a decryption time. Example of such cases include the presentation data which need to be shared in advance. In this case, an event organizer need to be prohibited to observe a specific date, e.g., the release time. Therefore, in addition to encryption, data sharing system need to designate the decryption time. Moreover, the system should designate same decryption time to each presenter in order to ensure fairness. In this paper, we propose an encrypted data sharing system which can designate a decryption time. We employ Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) as a building block of our system. Due to the key escrow problem where the Key Generation Center (KGC) can decrypt all ciphertexts, we employ IBE which is secure against KGC proposed by Emura, Katsumata, Watanabe (EKW-IBE, ESORICS2019/TCS2021). Though the EKW-IBE scheme requires a random identity, we confirm that our system can employ the EKW-IBE scheme as the building block. We also discuss a limitation when a timed-release encryption scheme is employed as a building block. Finally, we evaluate efficiency of our system with implementation evaluation of EKW-IBE by Ema et al (WICS 2021).
