Direct measurement of nitric oxide concentration in peritoneal dialysis solution

(in English) Dysfunction of the peritoneal membrane of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients has been suggested to be related with abnormal production and/or metabolism of endogenous nitric oxide (NO). In this study, we aimed at direct measurement of the NO concentration in a peritoneal dialysis solution using an NO sensor. It was found that endogenously produced NO remains in the dialysis solution at a detectable level. NO concentration was higher after 5-6 hr CAPD than immediately after an exchange of the solutions, strongly suggesting that NO is produced and released into the dialysis solution in CAPD patients. We demonstrated that the NO sensor can be a useful tool for the evaluation of the dynamic changes in the NO concentration in a CAPD dialysis solution and of the possible (patho)physiological roles of NO in CAPD.
