An evaluation study of a communication terminal for the blind and the deafblind
Makoto Kobayashi (NTUT) WIT2007-4
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study aims to realize a bidirectional and simultaneous communication which is hard for the deafblind. To achieve this purpose, the author made a communication system and evaluated it. The system is based on an internet chat. Its terminal for the impaired user is equipped with two-lined refreshable Braille display. The terminal of the system is named “Doubled Braille display terminal for the deafblind (DB4DB).” The feature of DB4DB is as follows; the one line of the Braille display is for confirmation of inputted message by the user, and the other line is for reading all messages from members who take part in the internet chat through network. When a deafblind person uses a traditional method, he/she could not read received messages during input operation, because the computer displays Braille characters of only the place which is focused on. Proposed system solved this problem. As an evaluation of the system, internet chat sessions among the blind user and two sighted user were performed. The session of the chat is repeated four times including DB4DB condition and traditional condition with two groups of participants. They were gave different themes to talk to in each chat sessions and the blind users did not use sound output during the chat. From the results and comments by the blind users, it was clear that they feel better with DB4DB than with traditional method. Additional to it, they could send appropriate messages when they used DB4DB.
