Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is one of the limiting factors to speed-up optical communications. It is also an obstacle to realize all-optical dynamic routing networks as the transmission path changes frequently. In this paper, we propose a new adaptive feedback control of tunable PMD compensator. The method is based on the hill-climbing method, however, the step size changes randomly, unlike the conventional hill-climbing method. The randomness depends on the probability density functions, for example, Gaussian distribution or uniform distribution. We conducted transmission simulations at 40Gb/s and the results show that the proposed method controlled the PMD compensator optimally compared with the conventional hill-climbing method. We also confirmed that the local minimum does not prevent the optimal control by showing all the search space visually. |
