Characterization of interlayer directional coupler in layered silica-based planar lightwave circuit

(in English) We fabricated and evaluated interlayer directional couplers in a layered silica-based planar lightwave circuit (PLC). Because of limitation of fabrication, the layered silica-based PLC requires different glass components for the upper and lower waveguide layer. This limitation induces a mismatch of the propagation constants between the layers through photo-elastic effect, resulting in an asymmetry and a polarization dependence of the interlayer directional coupler. In this report, we propose countermeasures against the mismatch by using core width tuning and stress releasing grooves.
