Break Arc Duration at Carbon Contacts in an Inductive Circuit

(in English) In order to investigate the effectiveness of the calculation method for break arc as well as the original arc $V$-$I$ characteristics, break arc duration at carbon contacts in an inductive dc circuit was measured and calculated; and the results were compared with each other. Arc duration can be theoretically known by calculating the change of arc current and then estimating the time for the arc current to decrease to arc extinction current. In an inductive circuit, the arc extinction current is less than the generally known minimum arc current; but, in real situation, its value cannot be decided clearly. Fortunately, the minimum arc current of carbon electrode is 0.01 -- 0.03 A; it is less than 1/10 of those of metal electrodes. Although the minimum arc current and arc extinction current are different in general, both values of carbon can be approximated to zero because its minimum arc current is extremely small. Under these circumstances, break arc duration was calculated and the calculation method, including the original arc $V$-$I$ characteristics, was shown to be effective.
