Analog phase shifters play important roles in phased array antenna systems and adaptive radiation pattern control for advanced antenna systems. Mechanically controlled analog phase shifters are used for the low speed applications, whereas electrically controlled phase shifters are required for the high speed applications with low loss and wide variable range of phase. This report presents analog phase shifters using 3 dB hybrid coupler with variable capacitors for reflection phase shifters. By the conventional technique of high impedance transmission line connection, a prototype phase shifter in 800 MHz range has achieved the variable phase range of 157.4 with the insertion loss of 0.97 to 1.88 dB and reflection coefficient less than -12.37 dB. A novel method by combining high impedance transmission line and variable quasi-transmission line reactance proposed in this report gives the variable phase range of 264.8 with the insertion loss of 1.58 to 3.16 dB and reflection coefficient less than -9.94 dB. The proposed method increased the variable phase range of 13%. This report also examined a pair of varactor diodes to suppress harmonic component excitation for high power applications. |
