Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) By using multi-hop transmission, the distance per link can be reduced and the received signal power will increase if transmit power of each transmitter is the same as in the case of single-hop transmission. On the other hand, along with the increase of the number of hops, the significant decrease of the received signal power due to fading in a given multi-hop route becomes more and more frequent. For this reason, it is unclear whether the introduction of multi-hop transmission improves the area spectral efficiency in fading environments, although multi-hop transmission improves the area spectral efficiency when fading is not considered. In this paper, the area spectral efficiency of multi-hop radio networks under fading environments is evaluated assuming that the maximum allowed end-to-end delay is very small and thus the end-to-end throughput is limited by the link with the lowest instantaneous throughput. Numerical results reveal that the introduction of multi-hop transmission can improve the area spectral efficiency even in fading environments.
