Observation of shear wave phonon in isotropic phase of liquid crystal

(in English) Some degrees of freedom relating to molecular motions interact with each other in soft condensed materials, which may result in complicated phenomena and extraordinary functions. A typical example of the interaction is the coupling between the shear and orientation, as seen in fluids consisting of molecules with anisotropic shape. A shear wave phonon does not normally propagate in fluids, which does not possess the shear elasticity. However, under the strong shear-orientation coupling, the spatial propagation of a periodical shear flow with a real wave number appears in the spectrum of the depolarized scattering. Very accurate light scattering measurements for several cyano-biphenyl liquid crystals ($n$CBs) in the isotropic phase were conducted with our optical beating technique and we successfully determined the coupling constant that represents the efficiency of the energy exchange between shear deformation and molecular rotation through the coupling process. The temperature dependence of the coupling constant showed critical decreasing towards the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition point and its behavior was found to be independent of the sample fluid.
