Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Some CF-FM bat species are known to move their pinnae rapidly and alternately back and forth while they are paying attention to a target. This pinna movement is predicted to create Doppler-shifts in echoes that bats are receiving, which play an important role in echolocation. However, the actual moving speed of pinna and the Doppler-shift of echo caused by alternating pinna are not investigated, and the effects in receiving echoes are not entirely revealed yet.
In this report, pinna movement of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum nippon was measured by using high speed video camera. In addition, the amount of Doppler-shift in echoes caused by pinna movement was obtained from the moving speed of pinna and the timing of echo reception. From these results, we discussed the possibility of contribution to the echolocation of pinna movement.
