Improvement of BER Performance in OFDM Systems with PAPR Reduction

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A major drawback of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems has traditionally been their high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). To overcome this problem, a number of techniques have been developed. The clipping and filtering is one of the most effective techniques to reduce PAPR. However, the clipping and filtering technique has a problem to generate a non-linear distortion which involves a degradation of signal quality. The over-clipping and filtering technique is more effective to reduce PAPR and a non-linear distortion, but the degradation of the signal quality is unavoidable. In this paper, we analyze the degradation due to the over-clipping and filtering based on clipping and filtering theory, and propose a quasi-maximum likelihood estimation method having reduced complexity to improve bit error rate (BER) performance . As a result, we can obtain a low PAPR and good BER erformance by combining the over-clipping and filtering and the quasi-maximum ikelihood estimation.
