Empirical Evaluation on QoS Control of Network Game Using DCCP
Soichiro Takagi, Katsuyoshi Iida (Tokyo Tech.) NS2007-199
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A sort of network game called FPS (First Person Shooter) are widely
played over the Internet. Currently, most of the FPS games use UDP as a
transport protocol for real-time transmission. However, UDP has a
problem about the TCP fairness due to lack of the congestion control
mechanism. As a new transport protocol for real-time communication, DCCP
(Datagram Congestion Control Protocol), which has a congestion control
function, has been standardized. However, no FPS games use DCCP in the
literature, and the impact of DCCP on the game quality has not been
investigated. In this paper, we evaluate the interaction between TCP and
FPS game traffic transmitted by DCCP in terms of the Quality of Service
using real machines. Though the empirical evaluations, we show that DCCP
improves the TCP fairness and the quality degradation on FPS game caused
by DCCP is negligible.
