Coarse image region segmentation using a region-based coupled MRF model and its CMOS circuit implementation

(in English) Coupled Markov random field (MRF) models for coarse image region segmentation are classified into boundary and region based models. In these models, hidden variables that determine the interaction between the units corresponding to image pixels are given by a line process and a label process, respectively. Although the region-based MRF models have a disadvantage that the solution is often trapped in local minima, an improved model that uses phase variables as the hidden variables was proposed. In this paper, we simplify and improve this model, and apply it to the coarse image region segmentation task. We report its performance is superior to the resistive-fuse network, which is one of the boundary-based MRF models. We also show the results of the CMOS circuit implementation designed using our merged analog/digital architecture.
