Influence of interocular inhibition in LGN on the formation of cortical receptive fields

(in English) There is inhibitory interaction between the left-eye specific and right-eye specific LGN neurons, which may modulate output activities of those neurons. To date, few studies have been attempted for understanding roles of this inhibitory interaction in the formation of receptive fields (RFs) of visual cortical neurons. In this study, we addressed this issue performing computer simulations of activity-dependent self-organization of geniculocortical inputs. When the magnitude of the inhibitory interaction was assumed to be weak, simulated binocular RFs showed a close agreement between the left-eye and right-eye RFs. In contrast, when the magnitude of the interaction was assumed to be strong, simulated RFs showed that not only profiles of ON and OFF subfields were different but also the positions of RF centers were different in the two eyes. These results suggest that the interocular inhibitory interaction in the LGN contributes to the formation of visual cortical neurons that are sensitive to binocular disparity.
