Attention Effects on Auditory Brainstem Responses During Contralateral Noise Masking

(in English) In humans attention-related modulation of auditory brainstem response (ABR) was identified during contralateral noise masking. Employing an oddball procedure with tone pips, standards (0.5 kHz; probability 0.7) and targets (1 kHz) at 80 dB SPL were presented to the left ear. The right-ear masking had three conditions relying on the intensity of a continuous white noise, i.e., (i) without exposure, (ii) at 40 dB SPL, and (iii) at 80 dB SPL. Participants each performed two tasks either ignoring sounds or attending to targets. Among the three conditions, only condition (iii) exhibited significant amplitude differences between the two tasks within the ABR latency, i.e., for standards ignoring > attentive, while for targets ignoring < attentive. When the frequency components of ABR were examined, slow waves rather than fast waves appeared more contributing to the attention-related modulation of ABR.
