Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Fuzzy ARTMAP (FAM) is a supervised learning system. FAM segments the input space with categories which are defined by hyper rectangles. The original learning method called FCSR makes categories grow only in the direction of expansion and allows the overlap between categories. Although fast expansion of categories inhibits the generation of categories, it accelerates the overlap between categories. The overlap complicates the input space segmentation and keeps generating categories during the learning. In contrast, slow expansion of categories decreases the overlap. However, categories increase rapidly at the early stage of learning. In this report, we have shown that the overlap is almost lost by introducing the contraction of categories and also categories can be expanded quickly.
