Inter-channel data communication for a binaural hearing assistance system using speech codec

(in English) A binaural hearing assistance system based on the frequency domain binaural model has been previously proposed.
This system can enhance a signal coming from a specific direction.
Since it utilizes a binaural signal, an inter-channel communication between left and right subsystems is required.
In order to maintain the flexibility, wireless communication between a headset and a processing system, or between left and right headsets is referable.
Thus, a lower bit rate communication is desired for wireless communication.
Various speech codecs were proposed to reduce the number of required bit rates.
Increases of electric power consumption and delay time are not desirable for the system.
In this paper, the performance of the system utilizing a differential pulse code modulation codec is examined and the relationship between the bit rate and sound quality is discussed.
According to the results of simulation, the attenuation level is almost the same as
PCM in case of both speech and pink noise if the quantization bit of DPCM is 8 bits or more.
In case of 8 bits DPCM, the bit rate of inter-channel communication can be 128 kbps,
while 16 bits PCM requires 256 kbps.
