This paper proposes an effective measure as objective function for quick optimization of the circuit topology and parameters in sinusoidal oscillators. The theory begins with paying attention to the impedance of the circuit virtually cut at a branch. This is called active impedance as a function of not only frequency but also device gain. The key point is that the device gain, such as gm of FET, exhibits nonlinearity with inherently a negative AM/AM conversion coefficient. We assume it to be the only major nonlinear factor and neglect others as minorities. This enables the measure to work without resorting to nonlinear circuit simulator, and drastically simplify the maximization process of primarily concerned terms of oscillator performance, i.e., oscillation amplitude and carrier-to-sideband-noise ratio at the specified frequency. The measure can derive optimum solution by analytical formulation for oscillators in basic topology. For ones in too complicated topology to be analyzed by hand-writing formulation, the measure can even carry out numerical optimization with an aid of only a linear circuit simulator. |
