By increasing system utilization rate and decreasing TCO, virtualization technology is expected to improve existing Operation Support Systems (OSS). In order to enhance such advantages, we are planning to apply virtualization technology to network-intensive OSS. However, currently related studies point out that several problems exist when virtualization is employed in network-intensive environment: performance degradation and resource conflict among virtual machines. Virtual machines require substantial overheads when accessing the hardware. While other related studies seek to solve performance problems by improving virtual devices, this paper applies “PCI Passthrough Mode,” which allows to transfer data without using virtual devices. Based on quantitative experimental results, we demonstrate the effectiveness of virtualization-based OSS via PCI Passthrough Mode in network-intensive environment. |
