[Fellow Memorial Lecture] Speech recognition research past and present

(in English) I have engaged in research of speech recognition from 1968. The approaches of our speech recognition research group about forty years ago were 1) construction of speaker-independent speech recognition system based on phoneme recognition, 2) speech recognition based on a large amount of speech data, and 3) development of utilization method of language information. At first, we developed a phoneme labeling system for constructing a phoneme corpus. Based on the phoneme corpus and probabilistic methods developed by us, we have developed several speaker-independent recognition systems using several kinds of language information. When HMM and word trigram were proposed, most of speech recognition researchers thought that they were coarse models for speech recognition and therefore many researchers proposed new methods by taking into account knowledge of speech and language. However, those methods did not change basic structure of HMM and word trigram. Although many kinds of products using speech recognition have been on the market, those are not popular. In order to solve this situation, I will describe my ideas.
