Automatic SignWriting generation from JSL text

(in English) SignWriting is a writing system for sign languages, which was developed by Valerie Sutton. It is the only system in regular use. SignWriting uses iconic symbols to represent the handshapes, movements, and facial expressions of sign languages. This paper presents an automatic SignWriting generation system for helping users to write Japanese sign language (JSL) sentences in SignWriting. The input of the system is the text representation of JSL sentences written in the gloss-based JSL notation we developed. The JSL text is easier to input on computers. Signs are consist of handshapes, spatial locations, movements, and facial expressions. Those elements can be modified to represent lexical/syntactic meanings. This system also attempts to generate such modifications.
